Virgil Bowlin and Peerless Mountain
is an acoustic band that performs bluegrass influenced by
a variety of styles. The band is based around Virgil and David Bowlin.
Virgil sings lead and plays mandolin and David plays lead guitar and sings
that matchless brother harmony. Their material stems from the songs and
tunes Virgil and David learned in the area where they grew up. Their
childhood home is located on part of the old Peerless Coal Camp near
Williamsburg, Kentucky, where many evenings they could be found picking and
singing with family and friends on the front porch.
Virgil performed from 1979 to 1996 with The Bowlin Family. From 1997 to
2000, Virgil worked for the legendary bluegrass artist, Larry Sparks, with
whom he played bass fiddle and sang backup.
Virgil Bowlin and Peerless Mountain consists of Virgil Bowlin, David Bowlin,
Jon Preston (banjo), Jim Harp (standup bass) and occasional guest Margaret
Bowlin (vocals). Their concerts are lively and entertaining, with some humor
and a lot of music. Virgil’s musical abilities are considerable and the
songs and tunes he knows are many and varied in their sound and influences,
but the emphasis is always on the mountain music of southeastern Kentucky.
